Biblical View of Death
Death is sleep: The Bible consistently describes death as a sleep-like state. Jesus referred to Lazarus’s death as sleep (John 11:11–14), and Paul used similar language (1 Thessalonians 4:13–15).
No consciousness: The dead are unaware of time, events, or emotions. “The dead know nothing… their love, their hate, and their envy have now perished” (Ecclesiastes 9:5–6).
No interaction with the living: Scripture warns against attempts to communicate with the dead, which are considered deceptive (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).
Awaiting resurrection: The dead remain in the grave until the resurrection—either to eternal life or judgment (Daniel 12:2; John 5:28–29).
